Cold weather is upon us! Winter brings fresh snowfall, fun with friends and family over the holidays, and cozy nights with cups of hot cocoa. It also brings with it a new set of challenges for your skin. Here are six tips from our personal arsenal to fight winter skin blues and keep you looking as fresh as a spring daisy.
- Lower the Water Temperature
Seems counter intuitive, doesn’t it? But it’s one of the leading causes of dry skin in winter. Have you been soaking in a sauna-hot tub, or reveling in longer, steamier showers than usual to beat the cold? If so, you could be stripping away too much of your skin’s natural oils, resulting in drier skin.
- Hydrate Your Skin
Moisturizing is critical in winter. Not only is the air typically drier outside, and that dryness can be exacerbated by the cold, but heating systems inside can dry out the air as well. A quality moisturizer like our VITAL C hydrating intense moisturizer can make all the difference year round. Look for a moisturizer that contains the vitamins and antioxidants your skin needs. As a bonus, our VITAL C hydrating intense moisturizer also has a time release formula to continue protecting your skin all day.
Oh, and if you’re going to be outdoors, don’t forget the sunscreen. Our PREVENTION+ line can help protect your skin when you hit the slopes. Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean you get a break from UV damage!
- Hydrate Your Body
Of course, hydrated skin starts from within. Staying hydrated is critical to your overall well being, too. But when cold weather hits, sometimes hydration takes a hit. When we’re chilly, we’re less likely to grab that water bottle for a sip, right? If cold water is a turn off when temperatures drop, boost your hydration motivation by getting some skin-friendly herbal teas. A steaming cup of chamomile tea can hydrate and de-stress you—both of which are great for your skin!
- Physically Protect Your Skin
Don’t forget to protect your skin physically, too. Scarves, gloves and face masks can help prevent your skin from being chilled and chapped in the cold. Plus, they keep you warm! Why wouldn’t you want to bundle up to stave off the shivers?
- Change Up Your Cleanser
Another thing you can do if your skin becomes dry, sensitive or irritated with a change of seasons is to change up your cleanser. Consider getting one that’s gentler, more moisturizing or more focused on skin repair. Our the MAX stem cell facial cleanser is a wonderful choice—it’s paraben-free, gentle, effective and contains restorative plant stem cells and extracts that help to protect and repair your skin from a variety of stresses.
- Overnight Moisturize
Even if your usual skin routine currently includes moisturizing once or twice a day, winter may mean needing to up the ante, hydration-wise. Our AGELESS total repair crème is an overnight moisturizer that also helps to exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin and increase cell turnover—keeping your skin looking young and healthy, as well as hydrated.
